Designed by Sundtek, manufactured and shipped from Taiwan.

The Sundtek CNC Retrofit Adapter is a modern retrofit interface for CNC machines equipped with Mitsubishi Meldas control systems. The adapter allows existing Mitsubishi servo, spindle and I/O hardware to be connected to a modern LinuxCNC-based control system.

The adapter is especially well suited for operation with a Raspberry Pi 5 running LinuxCNC, providing a compact, low-power and cost-effective control platform for CNC retrofit applications. Alternatively, the adapter can also be used with other suitable LinuxCNC-capable control PCs.

The goal is a clean modernization of the machine without having to replace the complete electrical cabinet, servo amplifiers, spindle drive or existing machine wiring.

Modernization Instead of Complete Replacement

Many CNC machines with Mitsubishi Meldas M60 or M65 control systems are still mechanically valuable, but are limited by aging control components, restricted data transfer, old storage media, RS232-DNC limitations, battery or memory problems, or spare parts that are difficult to obtain.

With the Sundtek CNC Retrofit Adapter, the old control layer can be modernized while the existing Mitsubishi drive system, spindle hardware, machine I/O and wiring can continue to be used.

Raspberry Pi 5 and LinuxCNC Operation

A Raspberry Pi 5 can be used as a compact LinuxCNC control computer together with the Sundtek CNC Retrofit Adapter. This makes it possible to build a small, modern and energy-efficient control system without requiring a large industrial PC in many retrofit scenarios.

The communication between the Raspberry Pi 5 or another LinuxCNC control PC and the adapter is handled via Ethernet. The adapter is designed to handle the machine-side communication with the existing Mitsubishi Meldas hardware, while LinuxCNC provides the user interface, motion control environment and machine control logic.

Main Features

  • Ethernet adapter for Mitsubishi Meldas CNC retrofit applications
  • Designed for Mitsubishi Meldas M60 / M65 generations
  • Connection of existing Mitsubishi servo, spindle and I/O hardware
  • Continued use of existing Mitsubishi servo amplifiers
  • Continued use of the existing Mitsubishi spindle drive
  • Continued use of existing machine I/O boards and wiring
  • Connection to LinuxCNC via Ethernet
  • Especially well suited for operation with a Raspberry Pi 5 running LinuxCNC
  • Can also be used with other suitable LinuxCNC-capable control PCs
  • USB interface for configuration and service
  • 24V supply from the machine control cabinet
  • Dedicated connectors for Mitsubishi servo and I/O connections
  • Suitable for industrial CNC retrofit and modernization projects

Advantages

  • No complete rewiring of the machine required, provided that the existing machine configuration is supported
  • Significantly less effort than a complete replacement of the drive system
  • Modernization to an open LinuxCNC-based control environment
  • Compact control setup possible with Raspberry Pi 5 and Ethernet connection
  • Ethernet-based communication instead of old RS232 data transfer
  • Expandable software integration for tool changers, coolant, work light, chip conveyor and machine I/O
  • Preservation of valuable mechanical and electrical machine components
  • Modern control approach for older but mechanically solid CNC machines

System Overview

  • Adapter module for connecting existing Mitsubishi Meldas machine hardware to a modern control PC
  • Suitable for compact LinuxCNC control setups using Raspberry Pi 5
  • Ethernet communication between the machine and the control software
  • Support for existing Mitsubishi servo, spindle and I/O components
  • Configurable machine functions such as tool changer, coolant, work light, status lamps and chip conveyor
  • 24V supply from the existing machine control cabinet
  • USB interface for configuration, service and commissioning
  • Clean integration into existing retrofit and modernization projects
  • Designed for installation inside the CNC control cabinet

LinuxCNC Integration

The adapter is intended for operation with LinuxCNC. Communication between the control PC and the adapter is handled via Ethernet.

The solution is especially attractive when used together with a Raspberry Pi 5, as this allows a compact control unit with low power consumption and modern Ethernet connectivity. For applications requiring a different hardware platform, other suitable LinuxCNC-capable PCs may also be used.

Machine-specific functions such as I/O mapping, tool changer logic, status lamps, coolant, work light, chip conveyor and other machine functions can be integrated in software.

This makes the adapter especially suitable for retrofit projects where an existing Mitsubishi-based machine is modernized and transferred into an open CNC environment.

Typical Applications

  • Retrofit of CNC machines with Mitsubishi Meldas M60 / M65 control systems
  • Modernization of older vertical machining centers
  • Replacement of old CNC control technology while continuing to use the existing drives
  • Compact LinuxCNC retrofit systems based on Raspberry Pi 5
  • Migration from RS232 or old storage systems to Ethernet-based control
  • Integration of an existing machine into a LinuxCNC-based environment
  • Recommissioning of mechanically good machines with outdated control electronics

Important Notes

This product is intended for technically experienced users, CNC retrofit specialists, machine builders and service technicians.

Every CNC machine may have different machine wiring, PLC logic, tool changer sequences, safety circuits, limit switches, parameters and I/O assignments. Before operation, the installation must be professionally checked and tested.

The adapter is not a universal plug-and-play replacement for every Mitsubishi control system. Compatibility depends on the exact Mitsubishi control generation, servo amplifiers, spindle drive, I/O boards and machine wiring.

Please contact us before ordering with the technical data and photos of your machine so that compatibility can be checked.

Required Information for Compatibility Check

  • Machine manufacturer and machine model
  • Type of the existing Mitsubishi CNC control, for example Meldas M64 or M65
  • Model numbers of the servo amplifiers
  • Model number of the spindle amplifier
  • Photos of the CNC control cabinet
  • Photos of the Mitsubishi control unit and connection cables
  • Photos of the I/O boards
  • Available parameter or PLC backups, if available
  • Information about the tool changer and number of tools
